Creating art is a daily part of who I am as well as wife, mother, and doting grandmother. What I use to create art may change and have seasons for one medium or another but the constant, is to create and explore God’s beautiful creation through that medium. For me, making art is one the times I commune with God the most and where my relationship with Him is intensely noticeable. It’s my desire to always glorify Him with the art I create with encouraging and uplifting beauty and creativity, that at times, tells a story.
I am primarily self-taught, living in the Southern California desert, with a year at Philadelphia College of Art and art classes at Antelope Valley College. My work has shown locally and I have done several commissioned pieces: Hope’s Flight ~ an illustration commemorating 100 years of Women in Aviation for a local aviatrix; a portrait of Rick D. Husband, United States Airforce Colonel, astronaut and space shuttle commander of STS-107(Columbia), for the Test Flight Class of 2004 at Edwards Airforce Base, CA where it hangs in the US Test Pilot School student lounge named in memory of him; and many private portraits. My favorite illustration was inspired by a hymn My Father’s World and is also named after it.
Art has always been a part of my life and in many ways the viewfinder I see life through. Almost everything I see and everywhere I go, I am inspired by something to either express in an oil painting, a sketch and now a quilt or a quilting pattern. It’s hard for me at times not to stare at an interesting face that would be a great portrait or snap a photo of a landscape in hopes of finding it later for inspiration for a painting of a landscape…
….and now as inspiration for an Art Quilt.
I haven’t actually finished an art quilt from one of my paintings yet but I hope to by the end of 2016. I have been focusing on original free motion and digital quilting designs for my longarm quilting service and patterns for the thread painting I’ve done on raw edge appliqué quilts.
When I piece a top I am usually thinking about how it will “quilt up” and what pattern would be best ~ I will even change the piecing pattern or make specific fabric selections to allow for the most creative quilting….the quilting it is my favorite part!
I have been quilting for over fifteen years giving most of them away as gifts and finishing them as part of my service for others.
